New York Pilates Instructors Organize NYC Collective

Not to be outdone by their West Coast colleagues, New York City Pilates instructors are organizing their own collective. The first meeting is tomorrow night, Oct. 21, at 8 pm at Core Pilates NYC at 99 University Place near Union Square. All area Pilates instructors and studio owners are welcome to attend. Here’s more info from a press release about the event:

Core Pilates NYC launches first NYC Pilates Collective, gathering leaders and new voices of Pilates in New York City for a series of meetings. “It’s such a great idea. San Francisco formed a collective recently and I think it’s valuable for this city. It’s my hope to break through old boundaries and divisions that have prevailed for so long in the local Pilates community here,” says Michelle Fama, Core Pilates NYC’s co-founder.

In a time of national messages purporting necessary change, Fama along with her business partner Kim Villanueva hope to breed a new voice for Pilates in New York City – one of camaraderie and communication. Real Pilates founder and Pilates personality Alycea Ungaro is also on board to host and contribute.

“I want the focus to be more on entrepreneurial ventures unique to New York City rather than what Method is true, authentic or classical and going rounds over who said what about the proper Hundred technique,” Fama said.  “Let’s get rid of ego and embrace it all with vision, input and perspective.”

The meetings hope to bring together the community of Pilates professionals big and small to reshape and redirect the voice of the industry in New York City. The first “Pow wow” is scheduled for October 21 at 8pm at the Core Pilates NYC studio in Union Square and will present wine, food and a guest speaker, an economic professor and Wall Street insider who will lead a brief discussion on strategies for keeping the numbers growing in this economic crisis.

“Providing information about small business; sharing news and strategies and hunches about Pilates growth and studio operations; what works and doesn’t work when launching new classes; to what feelings paint colors exude when designing a space, there is so much to share,” said Fama.

We have been training Pilates Instructors in Canada in the Body Control Pilates Method since 2003.

Although previously fully certified in the Physical Mind Method, we could not get our need for professional community met through this or any other Pilates training organization in the Toronto area.

We decided to import the BCP method from the UK for 2 reasons ... a very strong mat program with great variety, extremely suited for the "Average Joe" and most important of all, the opportunity to join the BCP Association for certified instructors.

We have held informal quarterly meetings with our local Instructors in Ontario since 2004 and in early 2007 created our own legal Canadian chapter of the Body Control Pilates Association.

We meet regularly to take classes together and hold business/professional development days, sharing workshops and personal experiences. We often host specialty workshops which we open to all Pilates Instructors in our community.

We have also created a student membership to help training instructors meet and develop networking links with each other and with their local certified instructors.

We have always been firm believers in developing a like-minded, sharing community amongst our fellow instructors, trying to remove the competitiveness and fear that exists too often amongst colleagues. It's too easy to feel alone and isolated as an independent Pilates Instructor ... you must connect with others to survive in the teaching "business".

Our philosophy is " Rather than being fearful of getting a smaller slice of the Pilates Pie, because of your local fellow Instructors, get together and bake more pies!"

Evelyn and Paul,

I can't agree more with your philosophy about "baking more pies together." That's exactly why I initiated the gatherings in the city. It's been wonderful to see the Pilates community come together in NYC - it seems it was the time as even many legendary old timers are receptive to the forming of the collective. There is power in numbers and in these uncertain times it's good to provide reassurances, comraderie and helpful info to all Pilates entrepreneurs. So many ideas and growth potential with this collective. Keep us posted on how things go with the BCP!
